I was surprised when I got to know the physical therapist who has been helping me determine a workout plan at the VA. When I first started, I thought I should be trying to rev up my actual exercise level so my heart rate would get up to 80% of maximum. She said no. Better to be in the 60-70% range for weight loss. Being a guy, I naturally keep trying to up the ante, and push myself. She tells me I am better off to go slower and longer, than push the heart rate up aerobically. Now this is advice for weight loss and may not be appropriate for others in other circumstances. As I said this surprised me, which is why I am sharing this first.
Over the years I’ve owned a Nordic Track Ski Machine and a pretty heavy duty tread mill. They both shared one common characteristic, they eventually became bulky clothes racks. Now if you are looking for clothes racks, I have actually created a Squidoo Lens called Garment Clothing Rack which is a better and cheaper way to go if you want a clothes rack.
I think too many people spend big bucks on exercise equipment and then fail to actually use it. Now if you will and do, it’s great to have it at home. That way you don’t have to get dressed, to go to the gym, workout, shower, and travel home again. You can get your exercise in in front of the TV, first thing in the morning and shower at home. Big time saver. But only if you do it.
If you are not into regular exercise, you may actually find it cheaper to join a local gym. They often have specials and intro packages and you can go and learn which machines are best suited to you and get some professional assistance is learning how to properly use them. For a while I was a regular at my local gym, and if you like the socialization aspect, this is a plus.
My wife is a Curves fan, and for many women that makes sense. Particularly if you are a bit bashful about strutting your stuff in front of a lot of guys and/or super slim gals.
There are two things you need to understand. Exercising is a powerful assist to your weight loss efforts and will make you healthier in many ways. It is not, however the secret to losing weight. The key will be to watch the calorie intake vs. your total calorie burn.
Getting good exercise regularly will help build your metabolic rate, and burn some calories, but cutting 500 calories a day from your intake is a lot easier than burning 500 calories with exercise. Particularly on a day to day basis. Now if you can do both, go for it.
Since Christmas is coming up, you may still be interested in getting yourself or your spouse or someone else some Exercise Gear Generally speaking, I am a big fan of Amazon, They carry just about everything for less, plus offer free shipping and have a solid return policy. Makes it a no brained from my perspective.
If you have a Bally fitness club by you, or similar, I encourage you to give them a call. You know they will be full as soon as the new year arrives. You may want to beat the rush, and learn the ropes beforehand. The staff will be able to give you more attention, and then when the new years crush begins you will be ahead of the curve.
